The 15-Minute Quiet Time Routine: Spending Time With God Before a Busy Day

Build a practical, Bible-centered 15-minute quiet time with Scripture reading, prayer, and reflection.

Primary Scripture Mark 1:35

Also in this study Psalm 5:3; Luke 5:15–16; Psalm 119:105; James 1:22

Some mornings feel rushed before they even begin.

Between getting ready for work, preparing for the day, and managing responsibilities, finding time to sit quietly with God can be challenging.

But what if you began with just 15 intentional minutes?

A short quiet time can provide a simple structure for Scripture reading, reflection, and prayer.

The goal isn’t to complete a devotional checklist. It’s to spend meaningful time with God and respond to His Word.

Jesus’ Example of Prayer

Mark 1:35 describes Jesus rising early and going to a solitary place to pray.

In the surrounding chapter, Jesus had been teaching, healing, and ministering to many people.

His example shows the importance of intentionally making room for prayer amid significant responsibilities.

Luke 5:15–16 also describes Jesus withdrawing to pray even as crowds gathered around Him.

These passages don’t require Christians to pray at a particular hour, but they do highlight the value of regular time alone with God.

Minutes 1–2: Begin With Prayer

Start by setting aside distractions.

You might pray:

Lord, thank You for another day. Help me give my attention to Your Word and approach today’s responsibilities with wisdom and faithfulness.

Scripture connection: Psalm 5:3

David speaks of bringing his requests before the Lord in the morning and watching expectantly.

Consider beginning your quiet time by acknowledging your dependence on God.

Minutes 3–7: Read God’s Word

Scripture connection: Psalm 119:105

The psalmist describes God’s Word as a lamp that provides guidance for life’s path.

Choose a short passage and read it carefully.

Some starting points include:

  • Psalm 23 — God’s care and guidance
  • Matthew 6:25–34 — Trusting God amid concerns
  • Philippians 4:4–9 — Prayer and godly thinking
  • James 1:19–27 — Hearing and practicing God’s Word

Avoid reading verses in isolation from their surrounding context.

Ask what the text communicated to its original audience before considering how to respond.

Minutes 8–11: Reflect and Journal

Write a few thoughts about your reading.

Use these questions:

  1. What does the passage teach about God?
  2. What is the central message?
  3. What instruction, encouragement, or warning appears?
  4. How can I respond faithfully?

You don’t need to write an entire page.

A few meaningful sentences are enough.

Minutes 12–15: Apply and Pray

Scripture connection: James 1:22

James teaches that listening to God’s Word should lead to faithful action.

Consider one way to apply what you’ve learned.

For example, after studying James 1:19, you might choose to listen more attentively in conversations.

Close by praying about your response and the responsibilities ahead.

What If You Only Have Five Minutes?

Keep the same basic structure:

  • 1 minute: Pray
  • 2 minutes: Read Scripture
  • 1 minute: Reflect
  • 1 minute: Pray again

When possible, set aside additional time for studying passages more thoroughly.

A short routine can support spiritual growth, but it doesn’t need to become a strict limit on your time with God.

Questions for Reflection

  • What can I learn from Jesus’ example in Mark 1:35?
  • What usually distracts me from prayer?
  • Which Bible passage could I study this week?
  • How can I put one biblical principle into practice today?

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the opportunity to spend time in Your presence. Help me prioritize Your Word and develop a consistent habit of prayer.

Give me wisdom for today’s responsibilities and help me live according to what I learn from Scripture.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
