Primary Scripture Matthew 11:28–30
Also in this study Psalm 13; Lamentations 3:22–23; Hebrews 4:14–16; Psalm 46:1–10; Ephesians 2:8–10
There are seasons when spending time with God feels natural.
You look forward to reading your Bible, praying, and reflecting on Scripture.
But there may also be seasons when you’re tired, discouraged, distracted, or overwhelmed by responsibilities.
Perhaps you’ve missed several days of Bible study and feel guilty about starting again.
If this sounds familiar, remember that your relationship with God isn’t built on maintaining a flawless devotional schedule.
Scripture continually points us toward God’s faithfulness, mercy, and grace.
Here are five biblical reminders for spiritually overwhelming seasons.
1. Jesus Invites the Weary to Come to Him
Scripture: Matthew 11:28–30
Jesus invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Him.
In context, He offers rest through becoming His disciples and learning from Him.
His invitation is not simply a promise that every difficulty will immediately disappear.
Rather, Jesus calls people to find rest under His gracious leadership.
When your spiritual routine feels overwhelming, consider whether you’ve begun treating it as a burden rather than an opportunity to know Christ.
Reflection question: What expectations have made my time with God feel heavier than it needs to be?
2. You Can Be Honest With God
Scripture: Psalm 13
In Psalm 13, David expresses distress and questions how long his suffering will continue.
Yet the psalm also moves toward trust in God’s steadfast love.
This passage reminds us that faithful prayer can include sorrow, uncertainty, and difficult emotions.
You don’t have to pretend everything is fine when you approach God.
Prayer prompt: Lord, here is what has been weighing on my heart…
3. Remember God’s Mercy and Faithfulness
Scripture: Lamentations 3:22–23
Lamentations was written amid profound suffering and the destruction of Jerusalem.
In the middle of sorrow, the writer remembers God’s continuing mercy and faithfulness.
These verses should not be separated from the difficult circumstances surrounding them.
They remind us that hope in God’s character can remain even during painful seasons.
If you’ve neglected your devotional routine, don’t allow shame to prevent you from returning to Scripture and prayer.
4. Approach God With Confidence Through Christ
Scripture: Hebrews 4:14–16
Hebrews teaches that Jesus is the great high priest who understands human weakness and enables believers to approach God’s throne of grace with confidence.
Our access to God rests on Christ, not our ability to maintain a perfect spiritual routine.
This is a powerful reminder when you feel spiritually inadequate.
You can seek God in prayer without needing to prove that you’ve completed every spiritual discipline.
5. Return to God’s Word One Step at a Time
Scripture: Psalm 46:1–10
Psalm 46 emphasizes God’s presence and strength amid instability and trouble.
Its call to recognize God’s sovereignty invites us to direct our attention toward who He is.
Try a simple routine:
Pause: Set aside distractions.
Read: Choose a short passage.
Reflect: Consider what it teaches about God.
Pray: Respond honestly.
Apply: Identify one faithful response.
Start small and extend your time when possible.
A Gentle Scripture Reflection Exercise
Read Matthew 11:28–30 and Hebrews 4:14–16.
Then write down your responses:
- What does Jesus teach about coming to Him?
- What does Hebrews reveal about Jesus’ compassion?
- Have I been treating Bible study like a measure of personal worth?
- What concern do I need to bring before God?
- What is one small step I can take toward a consistent faith routine?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your mercy and faithfulness.
When I feel tired, discouraged, or overwhelmed, remind me that I can come to You through Jesus Christ.
Help me release unnecessary expectations and approach Your Word with a willing heart.
Teach me to trust Your goodness and continue growing in faith, one day at a time.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
